The 1st mechanical slot machine was built in Eighteen Ninety Five and was dubbed the "Liberty Bell." Created by a California auto mechanic, the first slot machines had three spinning reels with a cracked Liberty Bell, diamonds, hearts, and spades painted on each. Prior to this invention, the name "slot machines" was employed to describe several kinds of vending machines.
The first real across the board use of slot machine games in American brick and mortar casinos is attributed to the Flamingo Hotel, Sin City somewhere around 1940. The administrator of the casino had originally thought the slot machines would be amazing to captivate tired wives of some of the largest high roller customers of the betting house. Little did he know that slot machine games would be an enjoyable activity for almost everyone and that the enticement would extend further than the apathetic wives. At this time, it is said, slot machines make up over two-thirds of all income brought in by U.S. betting houses.
